Bio

Nominated for no less than three Academy Awards, two Grammys and 10 BAFTA’s, the late Richard Rodney Bennett remains one of the UK’s most successful musical exports.

As a prolific and versatile composer of orchestral works and jazz, Bennett’s music first came to the big screen through his score to Johnny Mak’s British crime caper, The Long Arm of the Law (1963).
Bennett went on to score Far from the Madding Crowd (1967), Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) and Murder on the Orient Express (1974). The latter two titles garnered both Academy Award and Grammy nominations – with Orient Express winning a BAFTA.

Always highly regarded by his contemporaries, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim acted as the British born pianist’s Green Card referees when he relocated to New York in 1979.

Bennett’s more recent acclaimed works for screen include Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), Swann (1996) and Gormenghast (2000)
